Federation of Edinburgh and District Allotments and Gardens Associations

AFFILIATED SITES

In 1960 there were over 40 allotments sites in Edinburgh.

At the beginning of 2001 there were 23, going down to 22 with the closure of Hawkhill that year.

In 2006, Bridgend Farm the site that replaced Hawkhill was opened with 62 plots. This is some progress, but with 900 people on the Council waiting list, it is far from meeting the demand for plots. If you are on the waiting list, why not ask your local councillor when more sites will be opened?

In the current frenzy of development within Edinburgh, where the tiniest plot of land is sought for building flats or offices, there may well be threats to other sites.

If you hear even the faintest suggestion that your site is being assessed for sale, please contact us as soon as possible.

Below, organised alphabetically, is a list of Council run allotments and another of independent sites.

Have a look at some of the sites.

There is a greater number of sites in some parts of the city than others and it is the number of plots in an area which more accurately reflects the level of provision.

ON THE PLOT

peas and beans

  • If you want to ensure a good crop of peas, prepare the ground well. Dig out a trench and put in a thick layer of manure or garden compost.

  • Also, peas thrive in well watered soil, so be sure to water the crop thoroughly in dry weather.

  • Runner beans will benefit from the same treatment as peas; well-nourished and well-watered soil for increased yields.

  • Try staking runner beans as you sow them. Before filling in the drill, put in the support. If you stake once the seedlings have emerged, you may interfere with the growing roots.

  • If crops such as peas and beans are prone to slug and snail damage, ring the young seedlings with holly leaves. The slugs and snails may look for an easier snack to attack.
