DO YOUR BIT for allotments in Scotland by writing to your MSPs
in support of Scottish Planning Policy 11
SAGS (Scottish Allotment Gardens Society) has provided a draft letter which you can amend.
Please send a response to your MSPs - every single effort by individual plotholders demonstrates how important
allotments are to all of us. (12.10.2006)
FEDAGA AGM was held on Wednesday 25 October. A full committee was elected
though there is still no President or Secretary. Peter Wright will continue as Acting President and Mike Woods
volunteered to be Minutes Secretary (26.10.2006)
SAGS AGM - The Scottish Allotments and Gardens Society held
its AGM at Victoria Halls, Dunblane on Saturday 17 June 2006. This was followed by the Annual Scottish Allotments
Conference at which some speakers reported on the progress -or lack of it - on their sites, and others, from outside organisations
gave us lots of useful information.
Dharmendra Kanani, director of the Big Lottery Fund in Scotland was a particularly inspiring speaker,
suggesting that allotments 'tick all the boxes' regarding potential funding. For further information have a look at the
Investing in Communities website
which explains their aims and policies. (20.06.2006)
The City of Edinburgh Councilissued the
Draft Local Plan for Edinburgh, New Rules for Plotholders and
Rules for Bridgend , the new organic allotments site at Bridgend Farm. (22/05/2006)
Allotments under threat. Planning permission is being sought to erect 23 houses
at an allotments site at Shedden Park Road, Kelso. If you are concerned about the loss of yet more allotments in Scotland,
please write to Euan Robson MSP, 42-44 Horsemarket, Kelso TD5 7AE. Letters to other MSPs may also help. (29.10.2005)
Spring Gardens: On 27 April 2005 the CEC Planning Committee approved
the most recent application for housing development
on the Spring Garden allotment site. FEDAGA lobbied
Councillors up to the final meeting and they did appear
to take this decision with reluctance. Councillors
believed that if the Council sought to compulsorily
purchase the site for allotment use, the owner would
be able to refer to the Scottish Executive Reporter's
appeal letter as supporting the principle of residential
use and demand residential land value - and this is a prime site.
On the same basis, a second appeal from the developers
would likely receive a Reporter's approval, thus incurring
the Council in heavy legal expenses.
The Committee agreed to instruct the Planning Department
to include a statement to protect allotments in the
new City Plan which is currently being drafted, and
to encourage the provision of allotments in new major
developments. Both of which FEDAGA have already
proposed to the Planning Department.
